WIKI Fact:  The laurel wreath originated in ancient Greece but was also used in Rome.  In the Summer Olympics 2004 in Athens, Greece gave laurel wreaths to the winners. The phrase ‘Resting on your laurels’ dates back to ancient Greek and Roman traditions where victorious Olympians or generals wore crowns made of laurel wreaths as symbols of victory, success and status.
